Board of Directors Jeffrey Leiden, MD, PhD, Managing Director, Clarus VenturesChairman (Director since 2008, Chairman of the Board, Compensation Committee, Audit Committee) Dr. Leiden has more than 20 years of experience in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. Dr. Leiden was President and COO of Abbott Laboratories, Pharmaceuticals Products Group, and a member of the Abbott Board of Directors and the TAP Board of Directors from 2000-2006. From 1987-2000 Dr. Leiden held several academic appointments including Chief of Cardiology and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of Chicago, the Elkan R. Blout Professor of Biological Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. During his academic career, Dr. Leiden was involved in starting several biotechnology companies including Vical and Cardiogene. He is an elected member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Leiden represents Clarus on the Board of Directors of TYRX, Inc., Biolex Therapeutics, and is Chairman of the Board of Variation Biotechnologies, Inc. Dr. Leiden is also a member of the Board of Directors of Milennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (MLNM), a non-executive director of Shire plc and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ravinia Festival and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Leiden received both his medical degree and PhD from the University of Chicago and an honorary MA from Harvard University.
Edward L. Cahill, Managing Partner, HLM Venture Partners Mr. Cahill is a Partner of HLM Venture Partners. Previously, Ed was a founding Partner of Cahill, Warnock & Company (now Camden Partners), a Baltimore venture capital firm, and a Managing Director of Alex. Brown & Sons, where he headed the firm's Health Care group from 1986 to 1995. During his leadership at Alex. Brown & Sons, the firm underwrote public offerings or provided merger advisory services for over 200 health care companies, including the first outpatient surgery, rehabilitation, and managed care companies to go public, and several leading biopharmaceutical companies. Ed is a director of Masimo Corporation, Phreesia, SensAble Technologies and Tandem Diabetes. He previously served as a director of Animas Corporation, Centene Corporation (NYSE), Spinal Concepts and Automated Healthcare and Gene Medicine (NASDAQ). He is a Trustee of Johns Hopkins Medicine, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System and Mercy Health Services. Ed received an AB from Williams College and a Master of Public and Private Management degree from Yale University.
William Dempsey, Independent Director Mr. Dempsey brings over 25 years' experience at Abbott Laboratories in senior executive management and divisional leadership roles across Abbott’s pharmaceutical and medical device businesses. He successfully managed the commercialization of several high profile pharmaceuticals and medical devices, including Abbott’s blockbuster anti-rheumatoid arthritis drug, Humira, which exceeded all launch goals with US sales of $860 million and global sales of $1.4 billion in 2005. He also provided key leadership for Abbott’s $7 billion acquisition of Knoll Pharmaceuticals and Abbott’s $3.7 billion acquisition of Kos Pharmaceuticals. Most recently, Mr. Dempsey served as Executive Vice President of Abbott’s Global Pharmaceuticals Division, where he led the business to 15% growth in revenues and earnings in the face of major new generic competition. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President of Abbott’s Pharmaceutical Operations from 2003 to 2006, Senior Vice President of International Operations from 1999 to 2003, Senior Vice President of Chemical and Agricultural Products from 1998 to 1999, Vice President Hospital Products business from 1996 to 1998, Divisional Vice President of Hospital Sales from 1995 to 1996, and Divisional Vice President of Critical Care Systems from 1992 to 1995. He held a number of general manager and marketing positions at Abbott from 1982 to 1989. Mr. Dempsey received a BS in accounting from DePaul University.
Michael Heffernan, BS Pharm (Director since 2002, Compensation) Mr. Heffernan is a proven entrepreneur and senior level executive with significant experience ranging from start-ups to restructuring of a larger company. He has extensive knowledge and contacts throughout the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Mr. Heffernan has worked directly with over 100 companies in the biopharmaceutical industry, including consulting on the development/implementation of drug development plans, creation of partnership relationships, and development of marketing programs to launch new products. He is a co-founder and President of Collegium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company. Previous to that, he was President/CEO and Director of PhyMatrix. He was also President and CEO of Clinical Studies Ltd., a clinical research site management organization.
Art Pappas, Managing Partner, Pappas Ventures (Director since 2008, Compensation Committee, Audit Committee) Mr. Pappas has over 30 years of operating experience as a pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry executive and venture capital investor in life science companies. He has assembled a team of investment, biotechnology and medical experts who manage over $350 million and oversee investments in more than 40 portfolio companies. Prior to founding Pappas Ventures in 1994, Mr. Pappas held senior level leadership positions at several multinational pharmaceutical companies. He was an executive member of the board of directors of Glaxo Holdings plc, for which he was the chief executive responsible for international operations including research, development and manufacturing. Mr. Pappas previously was Vice President of Commercial Operations for Abbott International Ltd., and he held various executive and general management positions with Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals and the Dow Chemical Company, in the United States and internationally. Among the companies for which he currently serves as a director are: Genstruct, LEAD Therapeutics and TYRX, Inc. He was the founding CEO and is currently the chairman of CoLucid Pharmaceuticals. Some of the firm's representative investments include Cerexa Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Forest Laboratories); Syntonix Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Biogen Idec); Peninsula Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Johnson & Johnson); Panacos Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: PANC); NuVasive (Nasdaq: NUVA); Gene Logic (Nasdaq: GLGC); Nuvelo (Nasdaq: NUVO; previously Variagenics); and Arena Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ARNA). Mr. Pappas is chairman of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center's Board of Directors and is a member of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) Medical Industry Group Advisory Board. He previously served on the boards of AtheroGenics (Nasdaq: AGIX), Embrex (Nasdaq: EMBX), Quintiles Transnational (Nasdaq: QTRN) and Valentis (Nasdaq: VLTS). Art is a decorated Vietnam veteran, having served as an officer in the US Army 101st Airborne Division and the Special Forces. Mr. Pappas received a BS in Biology from Ohio State University and an MBA from Xavier University.
Scott Requadt, JD, MBA, Transactional Partner, Clarus Ventures Prior to joining Clarus in 2005, Mr. Requadt was Director, Business Development of TransForm Pharmaceuticals, Inc until it was acquired in 2005 by Johnson & Johnson. At TransForm, he had broad responsibility for business development, corporate development and legal activities, including managing the company’s intellectual property group. Prior to TransForm, Mr. Requadt was an attorney specializing in mergers & acquisitions at the NYC-based law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell where, among other things, he completed numerous public and private deals worth in excess of $1 billion, negotiated credit facilities of more than $10 billion and represented two companies during their initial public offerings. Before that, he was a law clerk for a senior judge at the Supreme Court of Canada. Mr. Requadt holds a B.Com (Economics & Finance) from McGill University (First Class Honors), a J.D. from University of Toronto and most recently an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar. In addition to being a member of the Board of Directors for TYRX, Inc. Mr, Requadt is a Board observer for Biolex Therapeutics, Link Medicine, Oxford Immunotec and Variation Biotechnologies.
Robert WhitePresident & Chief Executive Officer Mr. White brings to TYRX over 20 years of senior management experience in the medical technology industry through numerous positions of increasing responsibility with Medtronic Inc., Instromedix-LifeWatch, ALARIS Medical Systems, Eli Lilly, and General Electric. Most recently, Mr. White served as President of Medtronic Kyphon following the $3.9 billion acquisition of the spinal treatment business. During his time with Medtronic, Mr. White also served as President of Physio Control and was responsible for commercial operations for Medtronic Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management as Vice President of U.S. Sales and Global Marketing. Mr. White began his career with General Electric. In 1989 he joined Eli Lilly and through successive promotional opportunities became the International Marketing Manager for IVAC based in Europe for 3 years. At ALARIS Medical Systems, a $400 million medical device company, his last role was as Vice President, Corporate Development. At Instromedix-LifeWatch, which specializes in selling non-invasive cardiac monitoring solutions, he served as President and CEO.
